Provenance separates what the machine did from what the human did — and names both on the invoice. It does not replace how you price. It makes what you price visible.
For a century, professional work was sold by the hour, because the hour was a fair stand-in for effort. Artificial intelligence broke that. When a task that took a day now takes minutes, the hours on the invoice stop describing the work — the number survives, but the meaning is gone. Provenance is the correction. On every piece of work it shows two things the hour never did: what the AI cost to run, and what the human judgment cost. The machine, and the person who stands behind it — named, separated, and on the record.
Where a firm prices on outcome, the success component is applied as a modifier on the total — and Provenance still discloses, underneath it, what the machine and the human each contributed. The outcome can change the price. It never hides the work.
Private practice is on the back foot. AI has compressed the work, the bill has not moved, and clients have begun to notice. The pressure is no longer theoretical — it is arriving in the form of a direct demand to show what AI did and why it did not make things cheaper.
But AI is not getting cheaper in a straight line. Compute demand is rising. The infrastructure and the talent cost billions. Token prices may climb, not fall. Any pricing built on a promise of savings breaks the moment that promise does.
Provenance does not promise a saving. It promises the truth about where the money went — which holds whether AI gets cheaper or more expensive. That is the one promise that does not break.
